AUGUST RAINS

The rains
The rains
The rains have come again
Dampening our spirits in its torrents
Drowning the soil in its floods
Saturating the air with its wetness
Getting people acquainted with bed mates
Eager to lie side by side in the cover of sheets
Soldiers against the damp cold
With ‘kumba ya’ on their hearts
To bear the trophy of labourious victory
In nine month’s time

Nnedi, will you go for catechism today?
No, my clothes are not dried

The rains,
The rains
They have come again
As they did last year
